Seacom Announces New Submarine Cable Project Connecting Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific

2025-11-10

African submarine cable operator Seacom recently unveiled plans for a major new international cable system—dubbed Seacom 2.0—that will connect Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Spanning 25,000 kilometers (approximately 15,534 miles), the cable will feature 48 fiber pairs and establish 20 landing points across 15 countries. The project aims to address the growing demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and real-time data services. By connecting countries across the Indian Ocean region, it is expected to reduce connectivity costs by up to 300%, while also driving innovation in cloud services, fintech, and regional tech ecosystems.

The cable route originates in Marseille, France, and passes through the Mediterranean and Red Sea before splitting into two branches: one extends westward via India and Pakistan to Singapore, while the other connects North Africa, West Africa, and South Africa.

In a press release, Seacom CEO Alpheus Mangale described Seacom 2.0 as “more than just a cable—it is a cornerstone for a shared AI-driven future, ensuring Africa and its neighboring regions take control of their own digital destiny. By enabling open access and regional integration, we are building a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive system.”

By enhancing regional digital sovereignty, enabling open access, and constructing a resilient and inclusive network, the cable is designed as a high-capacity, low-latency network tailored for AI workloads. Plans include upgrading landing stations into “AI-ready hubs,” thereby linking Africa’s sovereign AI infrastructure with global data centers.
